Wandering Not Lost Installation

On Thursday March 12, 2026 the Trinity Star Arts Council had an opening reception for my exhibition Wandering Nots Lost. I installed the show in the historic Williford Foundation Building which sits on the town square. We had a great crowd for the opening night. I really enjoyed meeting the fine folks of Farifield and talking about Cuba and photography.

Kevin Sweeney’s timeless black and white photographs depicting intimate encounters in Havana and the Cuban countryside are the result of curious wandering. Together they reveal that the goal is seldom the destination, but the experience of building a connection with the people he meets along the way.

A memorable moment from his first trip to Cuba in 2004 inspired the exhibition title. Separated and searching for his group, he ventured alone into a field looking for photographic opportunities. He came across a group of boys being boys, who pointed out that the American looked out of place, and asked him if he was lost. He responded that he was wandering, not lost, and looking for his friends. They accepted his presence and continued in their horseplay, allowing him to capture their antics on film.

These images show the photographer’s developing vision, sense of composition, and ability to get close to his subjects. The freedom to roam and make photographs in Cuba refreshed his passion for photography while working on other long-term projects closer to home. Taken during three separate trips to Cuba from 2004–2018, this is the first time they have been exhibited together.

An important part of my practice is documenting both the things I see and things I do. For for everyone who couldn’t make it to Fairfield, TX for the exhibition, here is a record of my time there.

I’d like to thank the members of the Trinity Star Arts Council for putting on a great event and manning the gallery. One of the highlights of the weekend was meeting Patricia Pratt, the curator of the Freestone County Historical Museum. During my visit I spent a good chunk of time at the museum learning about the history of Freestone County and its residents and looking through their photo archives. I hope to see you again soon.
